ABOUT ME

I’m the author of the national bestselling novel NSFW, which was a finalist for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize and an Amazon Best Book of 2022, as well as the viral Guardian essay “My boyfriend, a writer, broke up with me because I’m a writer” and the national bestselling young adult novel Hancock Park.

I studied English at Harvard and have an MFA in fiction from NYU.

My writing has also appeared in British Vogue, New York Review of Books, The Nation, HuffPost, and The Daily Beast, among elsewhere.

On my Substack, Good Material, I write about the messiness of being a writer and person in the world, from misadventures in ketamine treatment to navigating the Arctic Circle on a ship full of artists.

I’m happiest when underwater or surrounded by books or dogs (ideally, both.)

I live in Los Angeles.

What People Are Saying

"Ambition bites back in Isabel Kaplan’s NSFW . . . So visceral . . . NSFW makes your brain spin on the #MeToo merry-go-round that’s come derailed from the base and spontaneously set on fire. Bleak and brave, this novel is a reminder of how skewered women are, no matter ‘how far we’ve come.’”

The New York Times

“An intoxicating exploration of male-dominated workplaces . . . NSFW is gripping, with a lot to unpack, making it excellent book-club fodder.”

TIME, Best Books of July 2022

"Explosive . . . [NSFW] lays bare the many troubling elements of Hollywood's corporate culture, from veiled sexism to blatant sexual harassment."

The Hollywood Reporter

“I devoured NSFW. The complexities of who we are, what we stand for, and what we hope we stand for―plus the ramifications of all the choices we make―are beautifully explored. I learned from this novel and I am grateful for it.”
